We all know of the recent events that have occurred regarding a 9 year old, innocent little girl getting shot yesterday. With this in mind, today I will be sharing an app that can help you if you are caught in a dangerous situation. mySOS is a South African initiative created with the sole purpose to help those in dangerous situations.

Unfortunately you will have to register for this app but due to nature in which this app is built, it is obviously a good idea to register and keep all your information in one place in case of an emergency.

mySOS is said to do the following:

(a) allows you to activate an emergency for yourself or on behalf of someone else

(b) allows you to choose the nature of your emergency
• Medical
• Fire
• Police
• Security Provider
• Sea Rescue
• Roadside Assistance

(c) auto-notify your registered emergency contacts on your behalf and provides them with the following information:
• Your name
• Your mobile number
• Nature of the emergency
• Your exact location (GPS coordinates / street names)
• Option to view emergency from www.mysos.co.za
• Option to navigate from their current location to your emergency location

(d) provides on screen display of your exact location and GPS coordinates

(e) offers a list of contact details for the closest and most appropriate emergency service providers, based on the nature of the emergency

(f) auto-dials the default emergency service provider, based on the nature of the emergency and your pre-defined provider choices

(g) allows you to search for , navigate to or contact the closest , most relevant emergency service provider, based on your current location, including:
• Hospital
• Clinic
• Doctor
• Pharmacy
• Police Station
• Dentist
• Vet

(h) allows you to set a countdown timer that allows auto tracking for the duration of any outdoor event or journey
(i) outdoor event options include:
• Walking
• Running
• Cycling
• Driving
• Other
(j) once the timer runs out and is not cancelled, the app auto-notifies your registered emergency contacts on your behalf and provides them with the following information:
• Your name
• Your mobile number
• Nature of the event
• Your last known location (GPS coordinates / street names)
• Option to view emergency location from www.mysos.co.za
• Option to navigate from their current location to your emergency location

(k) allows registered users at an accredited event to access the mySOS Events Emergency Assist functionality
(l) allows participants to contact the events emergency coordinator directly through the app, by means of a dedicated events emergency button with default event emergency contact numbers
(m) allows you to activate an emergency response for yourself or on behalf of someone else
(n) auto-notifies the events emergency coordinator on your behalf and provides them with the following information:
• Your name
• Your mobile number
• Your event number
• Nature of the event
• Your last known location (GPS coordinates / street names)
• Option to view emergency location from www.mysos.co.za
• Option to navigate from their current location to your emergency location

In theory, the app sounds great and it’s definitely packed with features that could definitely come in handy when faced with an emergency situation. Although the app is not that easy for novice users to figure out and it may be a little delayed in sending messages; I think that our very own local developers are heading in the right direction and deserve a round of applause for this initiative.
