Revisiting SEO & Social Media Marketing

I know, I know, I keep saying that I am going to post frequently etc. To be honest, I don’t know where the entire 24 hours of a day goes! It’s like morning becomes midday with the snap of my fingers and midday turns into evening with a scream at the kids. The next thing, I am making bottles for bed and then, I am up again working. 3 o clock in the morning creeps in like Chucky and as my eyes close, the phone alarm goes off at 4. God only knows why everything is moving so fast!

With NIYASH taking off so well this year, I have decided to make hay while the sun shines and push my business to new heights. Recently, I encountered a small disappointment, but let’s look at it this way. The glass is not just half empty, it’s half full as well; it all depends on which way you want to look at it. Recently, I have thought a lot about giving up blogging, simply because I have no time for it at all but I also realise that it is because of blogging that I have started taking my business to new heights so I shall keep at it although my blogging goals have definitely changed in the past year.

For today, I’d like to revisit TWO key issues that I have seen bloggers frequently ask questions about.

  1. SEO
  2. Social Media Marketing Strategies

Firstly, let’s tackle good old SEO! SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization (See here for a blogging glossary!). SEO increases your Google ranking which enables you to get on the first page of Google (and come on, be honest, when do you ever reach the second page of Google?) and to get more traffic. Check out the basics of SEO here.

Here are 5 more SEO tips for you:

  1. Use sub-directories rather than sub-domains when possible. Sub-domains are treated as a different domain and therefore does not benefit all the traffic and link loving that you get from your main domain.
  2. Keep the content up to date. Visitors don’t like outdated content. Updating the content frequently also attracts the search engines spiders to index the web pages frequently.
  3. Do not use underscores (_) in URLs, use hyphens (-) instead.
  4. Get a google plus+ page – It has incredible SEO value because when you connect your Google+ page to your website, your face is shown next to all of your search engine results.
  5. Focus on enhancing your on-page seo for the following page elements:
  • Page title
  • Meta description
  • H1,h2,h3 tags
  • url
  • text to links within pages of your website

Secondly, I cannot stress enough how important social media marketing is. To achieve your dreams of gaining recognition and generating more sales leads. Here are 5 great social media marketing  tips for you:

  1. Identify your goals:
Use the S.M.A.R.T approach to set your goals.
  • Specific – Just like your vision board, your goals for your social media marketing plan must be specific (right down to the finest details)
  • Measurable – You must be able to measure your success or failure to achieve your goals
  • Attainable – Make sure you set goals that you know are achievable. Goals that are set unrealistically  tend to become frustrating over time. Do not put to much pressure on yourself.
  • Relevant – A social media marketing goal needs to tie in to marketing’s overall goal. Is it to build an audience? Increase website traffic? Strengthen branding? Make sure the goal relates to the bigger picture.
  • Timely – Break up a large project into mini projects and set timelines for each. This will help you accountable to your goals.

2. Try creating a social media channel plan

If you have many different social media platforms to create content for, try to adapt a social media channel plan. Draw up a channel plan as per below:

  • The Channel (Facebook, twitter etc)
  • ONE specific target audience
  • Choose your goal (Are you trying to generate more sales, creating awareness about your brand etc)
  • Primary Content Type (Textual, video, infographics?)
  • Structure (What does a general post look like?)
  • Tone (Playful, sarcastic?)
  • Channel Integration (How will this channel work with your other channels for maximum impact?)
  • Desired Action (What user behavior do you want to achieve?)
  • Editorial Plan (Every channel needs its own editorial calendar.)

I know I have stressed this point before, but I will most definitely say it again.

3. Create content consistently! (Yes, I know, I haven’t been true to this point yet – but I will be. I just need some kick ass organization skills) Try using a scheduling platform so that you are always consistent.

4. Use your #hashtags strategically – use common hashtags to tie your posts of a campaign together

5. Create pinnable images for your blog post. Using effective visual content is a great way to attract a reader’s attention. When designing a pinterest graphic make sure that your readers know what’s in it for them! Speaking about that, how about pinning my image below.
