The Husband Series – Mr & Mrs Nel – Kirsten – The Bird & the Beard
February 23, 2018
My husband and I are totally different, but we complement each other well and I think we’re both better people because of the other one (cheesy but true). We’re both very hands-on parents – he’s probably changed just as many nappies as I have – and even though we parent differently it seems to work well.
Today, wine lover & blogger, Kirsten Nel will be sharing her love story with us. Find out what sparked Kirsten’s interest in her hubby!
Tell me your love story.
It’s a very Southern Suburbs story, I’m afraid. I went overseas for almost ten years after graduating from UCT and when I came home I went to a friend’s 30th birthday and bumped into Dave there. We knew each other from school but had never really chatted much, but for some reason we ended up talking to each other most of the night.
To be honest, I wasn’t particularly interested until he offered to cook me a Thai green curry. Turns out the curry he made was from a packet so he totally failed our first date but luckily I stuck around – he’s actually an amazing cook!
Who popped the question & how?
We had been together about 2 ½ years and had bought a house together. It has a little garden at the back and that became our favourite place to hang out and drink wine (we do that a lot). One Saturday we had just got home from lunch and were in the garden and I was watering my plants. The next thing I turned around and Dave was on one knee with a ring. I had been worried that he might try some OTT proposal but thankfully he didn’t. It was so perfect that it happened in our special place.
What are those super awesome little things that you love about your hubby?
Besides the amazingness that is his ginger beard? Or the fact that he’s a wine agent so our house is always stocked with awesome wine? Ummmm…the way he still holds my hand, how I feel so protected when I’m with him and how he makes me chai tea every morning. And did I mention he sells wine?
Name a few things that you feel, that no one can do as good as your husband can?
Cook, and talk about wine in a way that us non-wine specialists can understand without making us feel stupid.
If you could thank your husband today, what would you thank him for?
For working so hard to take care of our family.
What annoying thing does he do that makes you want to kill him when he’s there but that you miss when he’s not around?
You got me. He does loads of annoying things and I definitely don’t miss them when he’s not around. But I know I do my fair share of annoying things so I reckon it’s pretty even.
If we could celebrate husband appreciation day, what would you let him do/do for him to let him know that you appreciate him?
Dave is currently on a 2-week fishing trip in Namibia. If that’s not husband appreciation I don’t know what is.
What are some of the things that you simply cannot do without your husband?
Open a bottle of wine with a cork. Luckily for me, sauvignon blanc is usually screw cap!
What is the one thing you hate to do, that he does for you?
What are the words that are most frequently exchanged between you two?
Red or white? Just kidding – It’s always white for me! Umm…What’s for dinner? Actually, it’s probably Hi, my love. We check in with each other regularly throughout the day when we’re not together and that’s always how those conversations start.
Do you have any special traditions? E.g. Valentines dinner etc.
We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day but we try and have a date night every once in a while, usually about once a month. We go out for dinner and just have a good catch up, just the two of us. We make our anniversary a bit of a big deal (we’ve only had two so they’re still quite novel!) and we try to go away for a weekend to celebrate. Christmas is something we also celebrate, not really for the holiday but because that’s the time of year we spend with both our families.
